A dog left stranded at a rest stop on the edge of Mendooran has captured the hearts of people across NSW and Queensland.

She was rescued on Monday by the Warrumbungle Wildlife Shelter’s Tanya O’Donoghue, who spent hours coaxing the trembling dog away from the garbage bin she was hiding near.
The red stumpy-tailed cattle dog appeared to have a skin injury from being restrained, Tanya said, and was visibly frightened of people.
“I was in tears a couple of times,” Tanya said.
“I’ll never forget the first time I saw this poor soul sitting under this garbage bin. It was just haunting.
“When she finally went ‘I trust you’ – I was sitting on the ground and she put her head on my lap and she pawed my lap and looked up at me and it was just magical.”
After an outpouring of support on social media on Monday – Tanya’s post has been shared 27 times – a Mendooran family came forward to house the “beautiful animal”. All going well, it could become her permanent home.
Tanya said the incident has restored her faith in people.
“I’m overwhelmed by the kindness of strangers,” she said.
“I’ve had people contacting me from Queensland. It just brings out the best in people.
“I see a lot of abuse, but then all these beautiful people come forward to help and I think ‘yeah. There’s hope.’”
Tanya now wants to build yards at the shelter, “so I can take in domestic animals that can’t be re-homed”.
