A 51-run stand from batsman Jordan Peacock – and a 54-run partnership for Peacock and Mitch Russo – were not enough to help Newtown catch Macquarie in Saturday’s RSL-Whitney Cup innings.

The Tigers were without the help of skipper Matt Skinner, who was listed as batsmen number 11 but did not take to the crease due to a knee injury he sustained during soccer last week.
His absence was felt as Newtown only managed to record 201, in reply to Macquaries’ 319-run total of the weekend before.
Dan Medway’s 142-stand contributed to almost half of Macquarie’s tally in that first innings, and although Peacock was by far the stand-out for Newtown, no-one could manage to compete with Medway’s performance.
Instead it was Medway again, this time with the ball in hand, that did some serious damage, claiming 3/53 from 16.4 overs.
His haul included the scalps of Greg Kerr (31) and Mitch Russo (28), both of whom had it in them to go on to make big scores.
Macquarie’s other bowlers also applied the pressure, with Angus Cusack, Jason Green and Luke Carmen picking off openers Wayne Dunlop (19) and Don Holland (19) as well as Dan French (0) in quick succession during a four over spell that saw three wickets, a maiden and just three runs.
The win puts Macquarie into second spot on the ladder after the first round, as they look to improve upon last season’s semi-final appearance. Newtown will be hoping to make the finals after finishing fifth in 2016/17.
