The aim is to tally 1.5 million birds in the seven days of National Bird Week.
And two little birds, the Superb Fairy-wren and the Variegated Fairy-wren, have begun to nest on Smartphones across the country with the latest version of the #AussieBirdCount app released this week, according to BirdLife Australia.
The fourth generation of the app has been designed to help Australians tally more than 1.5 million birds in seven days, helping them step their way through the bird identification process, allowing everyday Australians to embrace their inner #birdnerd.
The app includes a ‘bird finder’, allowing novice bird watchers to identify birds by entering in their size, shape and colour and picking from a list of results. During the event the app also allows users to see bird sightings in their local areas, and the whole of Australia.
BirdLife Australia’s Sean Dooley says the app has helped many Australians discover the birds that share their backyards by making it easier to identify the birds they see.
“The great thing about using the app is that it makes it possible for anyone to participate and have fun discovering the birds that share their favourite outdoor spaces,” Mr Dooley said.
In 2016, 61,000 nature-loving Australians participated, tallying more than 1.4 million birds and recording more than 583 species, with the Rainbow Lorikeet, Noisy Miner and Australian Magpie topping the most spotted list.
The Aussie Backyard Bird Count app makes taking part easy, with your phone in hand you can join in anywhere—backyards, local parks, botanic gardens, schoolyards or beaches— anywhere you might see birds. With less than three weeks until the official event begins, Australians are being encouraged to ensure they have the latest version of the app on their phones and take some time to practice identifying and tallying birds.
