Celebrate Book Week
Saturday 19 August is the beginning of Children’s Book Week, an initiative developed by the Children’s Book Council of Australia to bring children and books together and to celebrate Australian authors and illustrators. Book Week celebrates a love of reading and showcases the best Australian writing talent. The theme for Book Week this year is Escape to Everywhere.
The shortlisted books introduce the reader to an array of loveable characters including a pair of fearless feathered creatures, a host of cheeky animals, a father leaving pictorial mementos for his family, a third-grade explorer and a much cherished grandmother. The library has all of the short listed books available to view on display. The books cannot be borrowed until after Book Week, but are able to be reserved free of charge.
A selection of the books can also be accessed via Story Box Library – an online resource available to access through the library website. Story Box Library provides a vibrant, interactive experience via a diverse range of everyday Australian storytellers each sharing past and present book titles. Simply visit www.mrl.nsw.gov.au and log onto Story Box using your library card number.
Book Week is a great event for children to celebrate their love of reading, characters and authors. It is a great time to talk about books and encourage children to love reading. Come into the library and be a part of Book Week 2017 by sharing a book with your child, participating in story time or rhyme time sessions, or browsing the book displays. Revisit your favourite children’s book or discover something new. Travel to faraway lands like Narnia or Hogwarts all by turning a page. If you’re planning a literal escape, invite an audio book along for the journey – they are perfect travel companions. Learn new and different ways of enjoying a story by trying an e-book or e-audio book which can be downloaded from absolutely anywhere.
