CYMS got better as the match went against Parkes and ran out 36-22 winners after trailing 22-18 at half time while Forbes also exuded its class in the second half to defeat Macquarie 34-12.
The strength of CYMS is shown by the fact they are unbeaten after three rounds, having scored 170 points and conceded 38, without being at its best while there is plenty of improvement left from the Magpies as well if you listen to captain-coach Jake Grace.
Macquarie is no doubt better this season but remains someway off the top three, with Parkes proving in its first 40 against CYMS it can really take it to the current competition leaders.
Elsewhere, Nyngan’s attack finally clicked as it piled on 50 points in a win over Narromine.
The Tigers have been quiet this season but they’ve won two from three so far and are yet to play a match at home.
RUGBY UNION
The Dubbo derby was outstanding on Saturday night. The Roos’ class shone through in the end and the defence shown by Dean Matthews’ men was so strong the Rhinos didn’t even look like scoring a try during the 80 minutes.
The atmosphere was brilliant at No. 1 Oval and having the night match early in the season, rather than later, while it was still relatively warm was a stroke of genius.
For the Rhinos, they were physical and strong but just couldn’t get that final pass to work.
The black and golds appeared to go in the match fully aware and played accordingly. If they are to become a force this competition they will need to start playing as favourites and having the belief they can beat anyone they come up against.
For the Roos, the first half was ridden with errors as the side continues to deal with its ever-changing starting lineup.
When the side does finally click look out because there is plenty of promise shown at this early stages.
BASKETBALL
The Dubbo Rams roll on! Saturday was the side’s fifth win from 10 this season and takes the side’s record up to 50 percent for the first time in a number of years.
Saturday’s win was over the winless Illawarra Hawks but the side still had to get the job done and did it in style, running out 84-59 victors.
HARNESS RACING
Shane and Lauren Tritton are back.
My Rona Gold won the first Red Ochre Classic heat at Dubbo Harness Racing Club with ease on Sunday, with Chris Geary scoring a comfortable win in his first drive at Dubbo. The victory gives the Menangle-based pair a strong chance of recording a third Red Ochre victory.
The final is this coming Friday night with a big crowd always on hand for Dubbo’s biggest meeting of the year while Sunday’s heats proved the final will be another quality event.
That’s all for this week but as always, keep an eye on the Daily Liberal sports section for all the stories and further wrap-up from the weekend.
