Monkey Maa Theatre Company is bringing Diary of a Wombat to the Dubbo Regional Theatre and Convention Centre.
Creative director Eva Di Cesare said the show was about two world colliding- the world of the wild, which is Mothball the wombat- and the human world.
“Sometimes you see shows that are for three-year-olds and up and you think ‘oh the play is just for the kids’, but we work really hard to make sure the adults are also enjoying the work. It’s for everybody,” Ms Di Cesare said.
“And the best part is it’s only 45 minutes. A short show is a good show I reckon.”
Creating Diary of a Wombat, which is based on the picture book by Jackie French and Bruce Whatley was a challenge for the theatre company.
Not only was it the first time the company had used puppetry to such a large scale, but Ms Di Cesare said they also decided to forgo dialogue and instead showcase Mothball’s emotions through an on-stage cellist.
“We thought ‘wouldn’t it be wonderful if the wombat is the main part?’ and ‘wouldn’t it be great if there was live music in the show?’” she said.
Overall the creative director said 100 people contributed to the work seen on the stage.
