Blood donors in Dubbo have donated more than 170 bags of blood over the Easter period, helping to save more than 500 lives.
The call for blood between April 10 and 17 to secure blood stocks over the long weekend saw more than a dozen locals roll up their sleeves for the first time.
Blood Service spokesperson Brian Bruce said while public holidays posed a challenge for blood supplies with many regular donors taking a break, locals kept blood supplies flowing.
“The need for blood is constant and it’s critical people continue to step up and become blood to donors around public holidays,” he said.
“With one in three Aussies needing a blood product in their lifetime but only one in 30 of us donating it’s likely someone you know or love will need it.
“The tiny pinch of a needle will last a couple of seconds, yet your blood could mean a lifetime to the person who receives it. Blood donation takes one hour – it’s a short time spent saving three lives.”
