She is coordinator of Feast of Artists on October 20, a visual arts study day for year 10 and 11 students starting stage six preliminary and Higher School Certificate visual arts courses. The event is being presented by the Visual Arts and Design Educators Association in partnership with Western Plains Cultural Centre. It aims to inspire students in their creative fields and future careers and reveal the diversity of art practice.
Ms Lawry, a visual arts and photography teacher at Dubbo School of Distance Education, hopes 15 to 20 artists will come forward and volunteer their time. “I probably have about seven at the moment who are willing to come and share their story,” she said. Hundreds of students are expected to take part in the event, the first of its kind in the western region. Keynote speakers will include Abdul Abdullah and Frances Barratt. Small group sessions will allow students to learn about the art-making practices and experiences of participating artists.
