QUAD BIKE SAFETY
The NSW Government has doubled the value of rebates available to farmers for quad bike safety measures. The government’s Quad Bike Safety Improvement Program, introduced last July, gave farmers access to a one-off rebate to buy helmets, undertake training, retrofit safety equipment to existing quad bikes, and/or buy a safer side-by-side farm vehicle. Today the Government has doubled the rebate to $1000 for the purchase of a side-by-side vehicle, $500 for the retrofitting of safety equipment to an existing quad bike, and $90 for the purchase of an approved helmet. As many farmers have more than one quad bike, from today they can also apply for two rebates. A new, 12-minute, online quad bike safety presentation (www.safework.nsw.gov.au) has also been launched to give farmers easy access to important information. Visit www.nswfarmers.org.au

MENTAL HEALTH ROUND 2
Round two of the Mental Health Innovation Fund is now open, with $1.5 million available to organisations with innovative ideas that can make a difference. The NSW Government’s Mental Health Innovation Fund is a way to find new, local initiatives that improve mental health services and outcomes across NSW. The Fund provides an opportunity for the best minds in business, the community sector and government to develop and deliver new and creative ways to help people living with mental illness. By funding these ideas, we can enhance the way we deliver person-centred care that focuses on consumers, particularly at the community level. Expressions of interest for the second round are now open, with target innovation areas including: Mental health and intellectual disability/cognitive impairment, Aboriginal mental health, Mental health and youth homelessness, Adult education and Child and youth mental health. Expressions of interest close May 9. Visit tenders.nsw.gov.au
APRIL FALLS DAY
I’d like to remind elderly members of the community and their family members to find out how you can prevent the risk of a fall in the lead up to this year’s April Falls Day, after more than ninety-five thousand people in NSW had a fall last year serious enough to require an ambulance, admitted to hospital for treatment of their fall-related injuries, which can include concussion, spinal damage, broken limbs, and head and facial injuries. This year’s April Falls Day is April 3 is a state-wide initiative aimed at reducing the number of falls among health and residential aged care service providers and across the community. ‘Moving right to stay upright’, is designed to encourage awareness and promotion of safe mobilisation, particularly for older people. Falls can be caused by the loss of muscle mass and strength in old age, side effects of medication, confusion or dementia that can have an effect on balance, or a drop in blood pressure. Awareness of these triggers can help in preventing a fall. Visit fallsnetwork.neura.edu.au
THUMBS UP
I was very pleased to see that Monday 22 May will now be a half-day Public Holiday within the Bogan Shire for the Nyngan Show following representations made by Bogan Shire Council. It is great to see the Council encouraging everyone to get behind their local Show and I urge everyone to make the most of their half day and visit the exhibits, sideshow alley and all that the Show has to offer.
