Shane Alexander Theris, 30, was arrested after a search turned up 2.323 kilograms of cannabis in plastic bags.
Theris faced Dubbo Local Court and pleaded guilty to knowingly taking part in the supply of a prohibited drug, and to speeding.
Magistrate Paul Hayes sentenced Theris to a seven-month jail term, suspended on the condition he enter into a good behaviour bond for the more serious charge.
A decision to speed on the Mendooran Road near an unmarked police car brought Theris to notice.
On the afternoon of January 11 about two kilometres south of the Mollyan Road intersection, Theris overtook the unmarked car, court documents show.
Police activated their lights and pulled the Hyundai over.
While speaking to Theris he became restless and started drinking from a water bottle continually.
Police gained permission to search the car and found the box with green vegetable matter.
In court Theris’s solicitor said his client had been working full-time until the previous day when he had advised his employer of the proceedings and was dismissed.
There was no suggestion his client’s activity was for financial gain, he said.
The man had effectively been delivering the parcel for a friend and while he had suspicions, he was not aware of its precise contents, the solicitor said.
The defence conceded the quantity of drugs was significant amount.
When the solicitor turned to the issue of whether the threshold for jail had been crossed, the magistrate was clear.
It was a matter in which the court considered the supply of a prohibited drug was serious, the amount was significant, and the threshold had been crossed, Mr Hayes said.
He noted Theris’s early guilty plea and that his record was not particularly lengthy.
Theris was also fined $300 and disqualified for three months for an unrelated charge of driving a vehicle while an illicit drug was present in his system.
