The maximum daily temperature hasn’t dropped below 30 degrees since January 1, with 23 days above 35 degrees so far this year.
The average maximum temperature for January was 35.8 – 2.7 degrees hotter than the long-term average – while the average overnight temperature was 2.3 degrees hotter than the long-term average.
February hasn’t delivered much relief, with the first six days of the month peaking at an average of 38.9 degrees.
Monday exceeded 40 degrees, but it was not hot enough to fry an egg on the asphalt. It was, however, warm enough to cause the iPhone to overheat as the Daily Liberal live-streamed the egg-frying attempt on Facebook.
“Put a black metal pan in the sun for a while then crack an egg on it.... then you might have some success,” Emma Ferguson wrote on Facebook.
“Won't happen. The rocky terrain of the surface has a greater surface area because of the stone-like quality. Therefore, it doesn't have the same ability to transfer heat like a griddle does. If it were a smooth surface, you'd have a better chance,” Kris Herzog added.
“Sunny side up please,” Ashie Marie said.
Reporters at the Wellington Times, Narromine News and Nyngan Observer also attempted the feat, with similar results.
Even Nyngan – where it was expected to reach 43 degrees – was not hot enough.
