Volunteers from the not-for-profit organisation gratefully accepted the $1700 cheque on Friday morning, saying donations such as these are vital in keeping the group afloat.
RDA treasurer Brian Walker said the donation will mainly go toward covering children’s registration fees.
“We keep running at a loss because we try not to charge the children because normally when they have a disability, money is scarce for parents,” he said.
“You can’t keep running at a loss unfortunately as it will end up having to fold if we don’t have funds.”
RDA president Helena Patriarca extended her appreciation to the staff in what came as a welcomed surprise to volunteers.
“We’d like to thank them very much,” she said.
“It’s very unexpected as we’ve been applying for grants and keep getting knocked back, so this is a huge surprise and very welcomed.”
Dubbo Regional Council administrative officer/DOS Skye Stephenson said staff from the division put money out of their own pocket toward what has become an annual fundraiser.
“Those 3pm chocolate drives really helped, it covered about a third of the $1700 we raised,” she laughed.
“This should cover the fees for about 80 kids.”
