Giddings finished with figures of 5-21 from 10 overs and tore through the Newtown middle order to set an achievable target of 176 for his team to chase.
Newtown had been looking sharp after winning the toss and electing to bat. They were sitting comfortable on 2-99 before Giddings struck, and within five overs found themselves in trouble at 7-104.
Mat Skinner tried to keep his side going and they struggled to 176 before he was run out for 41 to conclude their innings.
Early wickets threatened to make the chase tough for Colts but they steadied and hit the target in 42 overs, just five wickets down.
Colts captain Jason Ryan praised Giddings for his efforts but was happy with the effort of all his bowlers.
“Wes obviously did well, he finished with five-for but every bowled well early. I thought we could have kept them to 150 or 160 but Mat Skinner was able to score a few more.
Dan Holland and Wayne Dunlop did the early work for Newtown, combining for a partnership of 68 before Holland was bowled by Greg Buckley for 42.
Dunlop and Steve Skinner kept the score ticking over until Giddings struck. He got Dunlop for 39, with the score 3-99 and then got Mick Kempston stumped an over later.
Skinner (13) and Dwayne Kent (0) fell victim to Giddings on consecutive balls while Tom Barber (0) survived one ball to stop the hattrick before he too was gone.
Mat Skinner made 41 to at least give his team a defendable total, assisted by Dan French (16).
Colts started their run chase by losing early wickets. Bailey Edwards bowled Paul Hulthen in the second over before claiming the wicket of Giddings in the same fashion two overs later.
We should be back to full strength soon, then hopefully we can get a few more wins to wrap up the minor premiership.
- Jason Ryan
Greg Buckley and Brad Cox combined for a partnership of 112 to put Colts in a strong position with Edmunds getting Cox for 44.
When Buckley was caught for 59, Colts were 4-125 but Jason Ryan (18 not out), Chris Morton (20) and Jake Caldwell (17 not out) did what was needed to get the win.
Edmunds was the standout bowler with 3-40 off eight.
“There was a bit of grass on the wicket so the new ball did a bit and Bailey Edmunds was bowling well for them but Greg and Brad got us into good shape with their partnership,” Ryan said.
It was the fourth straight loss for Newtown but Ryan said they were a dangerous opponent and he was happy to come away with the points.
“That was a good win for us. Everything is going well at the moment,” he said.
“We still had a couple out yesterday. We should be back to full strength soon, then hopefully we can get a few more wins to wrap up the minor premiership.”
