Organisers are planning to have two sessions on the night of Friday April 7 and Saturday April 8 and one session on Sunday April 9.
Dubbo City Youth Council in partnership with Dubbo Regional Council (DRC) has made an application to open the Westview Drive-In Theatre for the weekend.
The activity would be part of the National Youth Week Program.
DRC youth development officer Jason Yelverton reported there were plans to have a capacity of 400 cars per show.
He said at this stage they were not in a position to release details of the movies that would be playing.
But he said the focus was to stage a community event.
“We’re going to make it so it’s as feasible for families to attend, I don’t think there will be anyone who will be upset when they hear the price,” he said.
The project has been in development since 2015, prompted by the vision of youth council member Phoenix Aubusson-Foley.
A development application has been made to open the drive-in theatre for the one weekend.
The asset, located on a prominent highway site, is privately owned.
The Monday announcement sparked a wave of interest on social media.
Many Facebook users reminisced about nights out at the drive-in during its 1970-1984 run.
In a post ‘Gregory King’ recalled seeing Back To The Future, Grease, Rhinestone Cowboy and Can’t Stop the Music.
