The Event Development Fund has been created to help grow the city’s events, while the Major Events Sponsor Program aims to attract activities that inject more than $30,000 into the local economy.
In 2017, council will provide financial assistance to the NSW Athletics Country Championships, Under 13 and Under 14 Cricket Championships, Swimming NSW Country Championships, NSW Touch Championships, NSW Little Athletics Region 3, the Rotary 9670 Conference and Lions District 201N4 Conference.
The largest chunk of funding will go to the NSW Athletics Country Championships with $9,901, while $8,823 will go to the Swimming NSW Country Champions- $5,500 of which was a hosting fee negotiated before the merger.
Five local events will also benefit from the Event Development Fund: the Dubbo New Year’s Eve fireworks ($7,000), NSW/National Indigenous Touch Championships ($5,000), Lake Burrendong Fishing Classic ($12,000), Wellington Show ($4,000) and the Greater Dubbo Fun Run ($2,000).
Council gave $52,820 in in-kind support for the Koori Knockout last year, and in return the championship injected $5.26 million into the city. In 2014 $98,000 was spent to support the Country v City match, which gave the economy a $254,000 boost.
Dubbo Regional Council promotions and events supervisor Lana Willetts said all 12 events that supplied for funding will receive assistance.
Council administrator Michael Kneipp is likely to approve the events for funding at the council meeting on Monday night, after he endorsed them for recommendation at the Finance and Policy Meeting.
“It is good to see that all event that applied received a level of funding, and this investment of almost $65,000 by council will support a return $3 million into the local government area,” he said.
“By providing these funding channels council not only recognises that events deliver economic benefits, but event activity that will enhance the well-being, social cohesiveness and amenity of our community.”
