Samara Davis from St Mary’s Primary School and Gemma Mills from Ballimore Public School were two of the winners in the competition run by the RSL in conjunction with local schools.
It encourages students to show pride and patriotism through creative writing.
Samara’s piece was called Camping at Easter, Aussie Style and talked about her family’s annual holiday on the Bogan River and the uniquely Australian aspects of it.
Gemma’s poem, Australia, My Country looked at everything that makes Australia special, from the animals to the weather, and also paid tribute to the Anzacs.
David Hunt is in charge of Dubbo’s Australia, My Country competition and said he was amazed by the quality of entries.
“It restores my faith in the generations below me and I’m very happy with what I have read.
“I think for our town, we have some very good children coming through, they are very smart and very switched on and I’m very proud to say that,” he said.
Mr Hunt said students from Kindergarten through to high school could enter the competition and praised Ballimore Public, who he said were prominent in a few of the categories.
