Mr Frangopoulos was the guest speaker at Charles Sturt University’s Tony McGrane Memorial Scholarship Dinner on Monday night.
In his speech, Mr Frangopoulos announced Paul Murray Live, his channel’s current affairs and commentary program, would be coming to Dubbo.
“I’m not talking about reinventing the wheel here, but I do have a sincere desire to use what resources I can to raise the awareness of the particular issues affecting the people from Dubbo to Alice Springs to Devonport by putting them higher up on the national stage through our television platform,” he said.
“We really want to help enterprises in raising the profile of the innovative businesses that are coming out of regional Australia that don’t get that national voice.”
It could be done both through traditional media platforms and via social media, Mr Frangopoulos said.
“When we began developing our digital skills 20 years ago mobile phones were the size of football boots and PCs were like suitcases but without the handles and the ability to wheel them from door to door. Then social media was a social booze up at the pub as we decided the news that was important for the public to see and hear based on our unique physical attributes, such as having a nose for news and a gut instinct,” he said.
Now it was a way for citizens to interact with each other on the issues, Mr Frangopoulos said.
He said regional people themselves were another way to boost the issues of the bush.
“To mangle a well known phrase, to get ahead in life it’s often not who you know, but who knows you,” he said.
“[CSU alumni] are now spread right across the nation and across the world and we should be tapping them as advocates as the issues that affect life outside our coastal cities.”
The dinner raises funds for the McGrane scholarship. This year’s winner is Ms Isabelle Haycock of Dubbo..
