Genni Kane releases her first solo album, Selfies.

With numerous awards to their name, including an Aria for Best Country Album and a slew of Golden Guitar awards for Instrumental and Vocal Group of the Year, the Flying Emus reigned supreme.

Up front and centre was Millthorpe singer Genni Kane whose strong effortless voice lifted the tunes above the standard country fare.

The Flying Emu’s disbanded in 1991 but Genni has kept on singing, whilst simultaneously taking on the extended family life.

During those years Genni recorded over 20 albums for children and worked as a session vocalist for the likes of Slim Dusty, Felicity Urquhart, Anne Kirkpatrick and Jimmy Little.

About 18 months ago when changes to the family’s dynamic changed, Genni felt the urge to write about the emotional journey that she was on.

“I decided that I had a few things to say and it really started when my daughter Georgia came back from overseas and then moved to Melbourne,” she said.

Like many artists, authors or musicians, Genni describes the writing process as a way of dealing with the emotional roller-coaster that is life.

“I wrote one song, and then another, and then another and it became a bit of a diary process I suppose,” she said. “Then I realised I had enough songs to put together an album, so I decided to do it.”

That process of getting songs from brain to vinyl has taken 18 months but unlike the days of the Flying Emus when it was expected that bands would tour, tour and tour, Genni is embracing the world of digital distribution.

“The music doesn’t have a use-by-date, it’s kind of timeless so I’m not in any hurry to get out there and it doesn’t suit my life really, to go doing all that touring around, been there, done that,” she said.

The official launch of her album ‘Selfies’ is this Sunday at 3pm at the On The Green Bistro at the Millthorpe Bowling Club and tickets are selling fast.
