Comerford recently starred at the 17 Years and Under School Sports Australia golf championship at Goolwa in South Australia, finishing as the individual champion while his NSW side also won the teams and stroke event.
The success led Comerford to gain selection in the Australian All Schools squad which will tour Germany early next year.
“About a year ago I set my mind towards the NSW team and once that happened it was really good and it was quick thing to get the Australian progress and once I did that it feels great,” he said.
“I’ve even working pretty hard towards it so it’s good that stuff like this is coming along.”
Not only did Comerford win the individual championship at Goolwa, he dominated the competition.
He took a three-shot lead into is second round and quickly put even more space between himself and the rest of the field.
“It was just a perfect week,” he said.
“The second round I started birdie, birdie, eagle and to really sort of separate myself from the field was really a big learning curve because I’m used to hanging around defending my score but I went in with a bit of a different mentality and kept playing aggressive and to come away with a nine shot victory was really satisfying.”
Comerford finished with a total gross score of 135, well ahead of runner-up and NSW teammate Jordie Garner.
Orange’s James Conran finished 22nd with a score of 152.
Comerford, who is aiming to play college golf in America when he finishes at St John’s, was delighted to convincingly win against his peers and score Australian selection but stated his goal from here on is to start making a mark in senior competitions.
While already among the country’s most exciting young talents, Comerford said it’s time to really step up if he wants to be taken seriously.
“I’m starting to get to the level now where I need to start mixing it with the big guys,” he said.
“I’m playing junior tournaments and it’s satisfying but I look at all the good players like Jason Day, Adam Scott or Tiger Woods and they were all doing big things at 17 and 18 years old so the next two years are really big for me in terms of stepping up.”
While the pro tour may still be some way off, there is no denying Comerford is on his way with his name now featuring below Day’s on the trophy given to the individual winner at the School Sports Australia championship.
