Green Light Day is an awareness initiative for students in Years 10 to 12, highlighting the huge range of careers available in the transport and logistics industry.
TAFE Western Manufacturing Teacher In Charge Neil Milton said more than 120 students visited one of three locations in Sydney for Green Light Day, getting a first-hand look at roles including logistics managers, freight loaders, forklift operators, and train and truck drivers.
“TAFE Western’s simulator, which is the only one of its kind operated by TAFE NSW, was based at the Woolworths’ Sydney Regional Distribution Centre at Minchinbury,” Mr Milton said.
“Students not only had the opportunity to observe the operations at Woolworths, but experience what it was like to drive a heavy vehicle with up to two trailers attached.”
Mr Milton said TAFE Western teachers Ray Driscoll and Helen Strik ensured the students experienced not only the art of driving one of these juggernauts, but also how to deal with any issues that may arise during their operation.
“The simulator provides a life-like experience without the risks associated with driving a real truck,” Mr Milton said.
“Some students experienced what it was like to drive at night, while others experienced what it was like to have a tyre blow out and how to control the truck safely.”
Mr Driscoll added one of the most difficult aspects for users to grasp was the reversing of a semi-trailer. He also joined with Ms Strik in hailing the day a big success, with both teachers enjoying the interaction with the students.
Mr Milton said this type of day was very important to attract people into the transport and logistics industry.
“In NSW, more than 500,000 people, almost 14 per cent of the workforce, are employed in the transport and logistics industry,” he said.
“With population and freight volumes growing, the demand for skilled transport and logistics workers will increase.”
