More than 120 junior bowlers from across the state will be in attendance, and it is the first occasion this prestigious event will be held west of the mountains. A huge crowd is expected with families, supporters, zone officials and locals turn out to see some of the sport’s most promising athletes.
This year’s event was to be held at Wollongong’s Fig Tree Bowling Club, but due to unforseen circumstances Bowls NSW had to seek an alternative venue. Club Dubbo was only too glad to help out and bring the championships to Dubbo, a city renowned for staging big sporting events.
Although it usually takes 4 greens to run these championships, the size of the Club Dubbo greens is such that there will be no issue in catering for the 24 rinks needed. Head greenkeeper, Darren Connolly, along with his hard-working staff, have the greens and surrounds looking a treat.
There are 16 teams competing from all over the state, with each team comprising a singles player, and a pairs and a fours team.
On the Saturday, teams are grouped into four sections, and following three games, each discipline is ranked from 1 to 16 and then sectioned into four groups for Sunday, depending on the rankings.
On Sunday, there are two games that will determine the final rankings in each discipline.
First, second and third medals are awarded to each of the singles, pairs and fours, and a perpetual shield is presented for the best performed zone team across the weekend.
Some of the names to look out for include Australian Junior champion Jono Davis (Dubbo Railway/Zone 4), NSW Junior champion Jayden Gebbie (Warilla/Zone 16), and Luke Grainger (St Johns Park/Zone 12), who is a NSW Pairs champion.
Zone 4 is the area of which Dubbo is a part, and they will be fielding three sides.
The Zone 4 sides are as follows: Zone 4 Green: Hayden Barrow (Dubbo City), Ben Cox (Orange City), Jono Davis (Dubbo Railway), Max Hannelly (West Dubbo), Tyron Pennell (Rylstone), Bradlee Roberts (Orange City), Tim Walsh (Nyngan). Zone 4 Grey: Jessica Ball (West Dubbo), Tom Bowman (Coonabarabran), Logan Fraser (Trangie), Aiden Leonard (Orange Ex-Services), Cooper McMullen (West Dubbo), James Robinson (West Dubbo), Reiss Robinson (Orange Ex-Services). Zone 4 Blue: Adam Ball (West Dubbo), Sam Bowman (Coonabarabran), Zac Miller (Dubbo Railway), Tallis Moore (West Dubbo), Logan Parry (West Dubbo), Tom Rich (Mudgee), Kurt Smith (Dubbo City).
