On Saturday night Team Endurance got the ball rolling with a barefoot bowls day with a twist. The fundraising event encouraged participants to dress up like Elvis or Priscilla, with impersonator ShElvis the guest performer.
Orana Relay for Life Committee member Alison Arnold said ShElvis Goes Bowling raised about $800 for the team.
“We didn’t have a huge turnout but everybody enjoyed themselves,” Ms Arnold said.
“We had one of our team members get up and sing with ShElvis.”
The idea arised after some of the team members attended the Elvis Festival and encouraged ShElvis to donate her time towards the Relay for Life event.
As well as wanting to get an early start on their fundraising, Ms Arnold said she was also hoping to encourage other teams in the Relay for Life to start thinking about how they would raise money.
“The earlier we start the more we can fundraise,” Ms Arnold said.
“It’s raising money for the NSW Cancer Council and it’s a great cause. Most people have family or friends who have been affected by cancer.”
The Relay for Life will take place in 12 weeks on November 5 and 6 at DCL Park.
This year the event aims to raise a combined total of $60,000. Already $8,750 has been raised, or 14 per cent of the target.
So far 19 teams have signed up to participate this year, with The Pink Flamingos having already raised a whopping $1,572. It’s followed by Team Goodstart with $1,307.
The first information session on the Orana Relay for Life will be held at Sporties Dubbo on Thursday September 15 at 6pm. Additional information sessions will take place on Tuesday October 4 and Wednesday October 26.
Ms Arnold said anyone interested in joining a team or creating their own was encouraged to attend.
To stay updated on the event, Ms Arnold said people should also follow ‘Orana Relay for Life’ on Facebook.
