Edu Garriga Viudes scored a brace while Dan Carter and Jono Baillie each picked up a goal.
Souths got out to a 2-1 lead at half-time and extended that margin by one not long after the resumption of the match.
Both sides picked up a goal each to send the game towards what was looking like a 4-2 result, before the home side picked up a consolation goal inside the final minute.
“We had most of the possession and controlled the game. I don't think the score reflects the game very well. I don’t believe we were really in danger at any time,” Souths coach Ray Winwood-Smith said.
“We had our chances to score more. It was a very good quality game and was played at a high intensity.”
The result still keeps Souths’ minor premiership hopes alive.
