Even without the two divisions’ respective Western Rams representatives – they weren’t eligible for this carnival – Group 10 produced some champagne rugby league to claim the under-16 and under-18 titles, beating traditional rivals Group 11 in both finals.
“[Group 10] had plenty of players in the Western Rams sides who couldn’t play, obviously Group 11 was in the same boat but the whole of Western Division is really healthy at the moment, especially Group 10,” Group 10 under-16s coach Kurt Hanock said.
In the under-18 decider Group 10 triumphed 16-0 over a Group 11 side including Dubbo-based juniors Jack Davis, Jaidyn Chapman, Kane McDermott, Blake Frost, Kaidyn Hopkins and Jaylen Rose.
Macquarie hooker McDermott was strong all day for the Group 11 18s.
Group 10 won the match on the back of tries from Oberon fullback Josh Rivett, Orange CYMS winger Josh Swain and wide-running Oberon lock Jack Fenton.
In the under-16 final Group 10 was made to work a lot harder, ultimately winning 18-12.
Group 10 got out to an early 10-0 lead but tries to Blaine Corcoran and Todd Deveigne had Group 11 back in the game at 14-12 late on.
But a Dion James try sealed the win for the hosts.
“I’m not sure if our guys have beaten Group 11 in that age group many times,” Hancock said.
