Bendigo’s Central Deborah Gold Mine’s poppet-head is illuminated in the red, white and blue of the French national flag tonight, in tribute to the at least 84 people killed in a truck attack in the southern French beachside town of Nice on Thursday.

Bendigo Heritage Attractions acting chief executive officer Wayne Gregson said the installation of colour-changing lights at the mine had coincidentally just been completed in the aftermath of the attack.
“Like everyone else, our staff were horrified as the news of the Nice outrage grew worse and worse during the day, and just late this afternoon one of the gold mine staff suggested we now had a way to show that Bendigo cares,” he said.
The attack was the second in a matter of months in France, with a state of emergency brought in after militants killed 130 people in Paris last November due to expire on July 26.
The new lights, which have been in the planning for some months, will be formally launched at a later date.
