Steve McLellan had just seen his side bounce back after consecutive Group 11 losses but there was no sign of a smile on his face following the 44-32 win over Westside at Caltex Park.

In a derby where neither side could muster any strong on-line defence, the Raiders’ attacking talents came to the fore late and they scored a vital 12-point win.
“Far from happy,” McLellan said.
“I’m happy we’ve got two points but things we’ve worked on we haven’t delivered in a game. We work hard during the week but don’t then bring it to the field.”
The Rabbitohs, despite having just one win next to their name this season, stuck it to the Raiders and even led 22-20 at half time.
But Macquarie scored three of the final four tries, leaving Westside coach Robbie Dunn disappointed
“Where we are now down the bottom we need to win every game and need the bounce of the ball but it went their way today,” he said.
“But I’m not making excuses, we had our chances.”
Westside opened the scoring through a determined Colt Tairua but Rowan Orcher, playing his first match since being suspended in last July’s heated Macquarie-Westside derby, scored a classy and eye-catching double either side of a Norm Button try to set up a 16-6 lead for the Raiders.
Orcher’s first came off a neat ball from returning half Josh Merritt and the duo, who looked dangerous all match on the right edge with second rower Wade Peachey, combined again shortly after to get the crowd on their feet.
But the men in red and green finished the first half the better and Nathan Ryan, Kurt Fuller and a hard-running EJ Fernando all crossed in final 20 minutes of the half to put their side in front at the break.
Ten minutes into the second stanza things were all square but then the Raiders, off the back of a 11-6 penalty count, stamped their authority through tries to Ash Widders, Wade Peachey and Luke Taylor.
The Rabbitohs scored a late consolation through flying fullback Sam Coe but for McLellan that was just another sign of his side allowing soft tries.
“Every time we got to the edges and where we wanted to play we’d make break,” a clearly frustrated McLellan said.
“And then we’d score but every time we were happy to let them come back and score so that’s what we need to take out of the game. We just need to be better.”
McLellan added his side need to vastly improve before next weekend’s clash with Parkes while Dunn said the positive for his side was that the Rabbitohs mixed it with a top four side.
“We’ll give whoever we’re playing now a shake,” he said.
“We’ll make it hard for them to earn their points, that’s for sure.”
