About 5.15am, police and emergency services were called to Dooral Street following reports of an altercation between two men.
Police will allege a 43-year-old man and a 72-year-old man became involved in a fight outside a house.
During the altercation, the older man was allegedly held down by the younger man before a witness was able to subdue the younger man.
The older man was treated at the scene by NSW Ambulance Paramedics but died on-route to Brewarrina Hospital.
Police from Darling River Local Area Command established a crime scene and arrested the 43-year-old man.
He was taken to Brewarrina Police Station and charged with assault causing death.
The man was refused bail to appear before Bourke Local Court on Friday, June 24.
