In a statement Jetgo managing director Paul Bredereck said it had always been the company's intention to shift from Avalon Airport to an alternative closer to the Victorian capital.
"When Jetgo first offered direct jet services from Dubbo to Melbourne there was no space available at Melbourne’s Tullamarine Airport, and Essendon Airport required the installation of security screening services," the statement said.
"So Jetgo used Avalon Airport as a temporary measure. Unfortunately the approval process for the security screening services took much longer than expected, but finally the wait is over and Jetgo would like to thank the patience of their customers who have supported the services for the last eight months."
Mr Bredereck outlined the reasons why Essendon Airport is "Melbourne’s most convenient airport".
"Its close proximity to the Melbourne CBD, unparalleled connectivity with surrounding road network and numerous transport options, coupled with on-airport amenity offering, means Essendon Airport can provide each and every customer with VIP treatment," he said
Other advantages to the shift include:
* Getting to Essendon Airport is easy by car or taxi
* 10 minutes closer to the CBD than Melbourne Airport
* No queues with no-frills regional style terminal check in
* No runway congestion, so minimal delays
* Cheapest city airport parking in Australia; only $8 per day
Essendon Airport has constructed a temporary terminal to accommodate Jetgo’s services while the heritage listed Essendon Airport Terminal is undergoing a $20 million refurbishment.
