"He hit a flat spot. His work was ordinary," Stitt admitted.

However, in subsequent days the six-year-old gelding, a winner of 11 races, marched back into tip-top order.

"He picked up again. He's back to his normal self," Stitt added. "I got glowing reports about his work on Thursday and again on Friday.

"His work has been very pleasing. He's very well in himself now."

On Sunday at Mudgee Single Spirit will be out to add another cup to his list of honours when he lines up in the $35,000 Gooree Park Gooree Cup (1600m).

Two starts back Single Spirit, with Sunday's rider, 3kg claiming apprentice Mikayla Weir in the saddle, scored an impressive win in the 1700m Wellington Cup on March 13.

Single Spirit found the lead at the 1000m and Weir and the hardy gelding scampered away to record a 1.3 length win.

Weir, apprenticed to Todd Howlett and a former champion barrel racer, now has a good knowledge of Single Spirit, a factor Stitt said was important.

"She rides very well, the lass," Stitt said. "And she knows Single Spirit now. That always helps."

Senior jockey Scott Thurlow is Single Spirit's regular track rider and he has an intimate knowledge of his well-being.

"Scott got off the other day and said 'gee that horse is going great.'

"Scott never says much but he said he came off the track kicking up and really well in himself. That's made me really happy.

"The horse is going great."

With his record Single Spirit is starting to attract massive weights and handicappers have lumped him with 63kg for Sunday's assignment. Weir's claim certainly helps.

Tactics will play an important role.

"There's no leader," Stitt said after accessing the form. "He'll go forward from the barrier (four) and roll along again. He led when he won the Dubbo Cup and in the Wellington Cup.

"I would have preferred a nice sit with pace on up front but as long as he gets into his rhythm.

"He's such a long striding fellow. The big track at Mudgee will suit him."
