Stanley Kubrick dared to play nuclear war for laughs in his groundbreaking satire, which shocked the world in 1964 and unhappily has lost little relevance today. Peter Sellers plays three roles, including the wheelchair-bound Nazi scientist of the title, opposite George C. Scott and Sterling Hayden as gung-ho American military men. Digitally projected. Astor, tomorrow, 7pm. Double bill with Our Man In Havana.
MARGUERITE (128 minutes) M
Xavier Giannoli's Jazz Age period drama chronicles the career of a wealthy socialite (Catherine Frot) determined to establish herself as an opera singer despite her total lack of talent. It's both a funny story and a painfully sad one, which, like Tim Burton's Ed Wood, raises some basic questions about the nature and purpose of art. Selected.
THE GOONIES (114 minutes) PG
Conceived by producer Steven Spielberg as a tribute to the Little Rascals shorts of old, Richard Donner's rowdy 1985 adventure-comedy follows a youthful band of misfits on a quest for buried treasure. Josh Brolin and Corey Feldman are among the stars who went on to bigger if not necessarily better things. Special 30th-anniversary screening presented by the Red 8 Agency. Digitally projected. Backlot Studio, today, 6pm. Booking advised (red8agency.com).
MIDNIGHT SPECIAL (112 minutes) M
Borrowing from Steven Spielberg, John Carpenter and M. Night Shyamalan, this streamlined paranormal action-thriller from writer-director Jeff Nichols (Mud) sets a mood of cosiness underwritten by paranoia. Michael Shannon dials down his usual manic intensity in the lead role of a devoted dad fleeing from a Texan cult with his young son (Jaeden Lieberher). Selected.
MY BIG NIGHT (100 minutes) Unrated 18+
The Spanish writer-director Alex de la Iglesia (Witching and Bitching) is known for his anarchic, gleefully tasteless approach to genres from comedy to horror. His latest is a frantic farce set behind the scenes of a TV variety show where various conflicts come to a head on New Year's Eve. Screens as part of the Spanish Film Festival. Kino, today, 6pm.
