Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development Warren Truss recently announced regional communities would be consulted as part of a revamped development policy.
"These discussions will put regional communities, including Indigenous communities, firmly in the drivers seat by focusing on growing opportunities through nurturing innovation and investing in infrastructure," Mr Truss said.
"More often than not the opportunities and solutions identified at a local level to meet local needs are the best."
RUN is hoping this will be an opportunity for the importance of regional universities to be identified.
"Regional universities are fundamental contributors to the economic, social and cultural development of their regions through their teaching of students, research and broader engagement activities with regional industries and communities," RUN chair Professor Jan Thomas said.
"Regional innovation is the key to developing regional economies and we are pleased that the consultations will focus on nurturing innovation in consultation with regional business and the academic community.
"Regional development policy should complement the Innovation and Science agenda."
As part of the revamp Assistant Minister Michael McCormack will travel across Australia to talk to local community leaders, regional businesses, academic institutions and regional Australians.
The first visits are planned for Tasmania and Western Australia.
