The lure of $3500 in prize money, with $1000 for the Cliff Hazell Memorial Wheelrace, has drawn a solid list of cycling talent in the Open carnival, while in excess of 80 riders in the under 9, 11 and 13 divisions will battle to be crowned state champion in the scratch race, time trial and sprint derby events.
Among the nominations are Dubbo's own state under-15 keirin champion Dylan Eather, national under-15 road race champion Kurt Eather, national under-15 road race runner-up Luke Ensor, national under-19 road race fourth place getter Adam Mitchell, national under-15 individual time trial champion Will McClennon and decorated track star, Lara Batkin. Jason Canobie, Tim Hines, Alex Russell, Heather Ticehurst, Sam Fitzgerald, Chris Couper, Haylee Fuller and Danny Barber will also take part in the open carnival for the Dubbo Cycle Club.
Fuller and Barber recently rode at the NSW under-15 and 17 state championships at Dunc Gray Velodrome and both riders excelled in their respective events, recording personal best times in all track disciplines.
The open carnival will be divided into four senior divisions and U15 and U17 divisions and is comprised of six events, including two scratch races, an elimination race, keirin, handicap race and the Cliff Hazell Memorial Wheelrace, which riders must qualify for throughout the evening.
The Cliff Hazell Memorial Wheelrace, now in its 16th year, was named in honour of the former Dubbo Cycle Club committeeman, who held several positions of office over many decades of service with the club and was part of the driving force to affiliate the club with the sports governing bodies.
Last year's Cliff Hazell Memorial Wheelrace was taken out by Orange's Tim Guy, who rides in the National Road Series for Taiwan-based UCI Continental team Attaque Team Gusto, which was formerly based in Melbourne as Team search2retain/health. com.au.
Dubbo Cycle Club will be represented in the junior state championships by Tyler Barnes, Angus Campbell, Makayla, Imogen, Jessica, Zara and Zac Fuller, Will and Chris Gilbert, Emily and Trent Hines, Louis and Isabelle Russell, Brodie Wheeler and Tom Williamson.
The junior time trial championships begin at 2pm on Saturday, February 13, followed by the junior scratch races and open carnival from 4pm, while the sprint derbies begin at 9am on the Sunday.
