Wongarbon teenager Teagan Ferguson is currently at Westmead Children's Hospital in Sydney receiving treatment for acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL).
A rare disease that accounts for just 0.3 per cent of all cancers diagnosed, ALL can occur at any age but children between the ages of zero to 14 years account for almost 60 per cent of cases.
Teagan was due to start year 8 studies at St John's College in recent days but instead she is receiving treatment, with the process set to be long and arduous.
Aware of the strain she and he family are under, her colleagues at the Orana Rural Fire Service Cadets have got behind the cause and will be taking part in a head shave at the end of the month.
At this stage a date has been set tentatively for February 27, with a location hopefully being secured in the coming days
In conjunction with the shave, a fundraiser called Toss The Locks For Teagan has been set up through Gofundme with the goal of collecting $2000 for the family, however organisers have been overwhelmed by the support shown in just a little more than a week.
"We're currently sitting on $820 and we haven't had the fundraiser up online for long," organiser Rowie Bayley said on Monday.
"When you have something like this you realise how generous people can be. Some donations are $10 and $20, and we've had one of $200 as well as some in between.
"Some of them have come from people that know Teagan and the family, and some from complete strangers.
"The Illawarra Cadets also made contact and they want to do a head shave down there as well, and they have set a target of $1000.
"These people have met Teagan maybe once for three days at a cadet competition and they want to help out, which is terrific."
