Kenneth Gordon Williams pleaded guilty when was brought before relieving Magistrate Brian Van Zuylen in Dubbo Local Court.
Police said the 47-year-old held a closed fist to a woman's face during a heated argument.
The court heard the woman expressed fears for her safety.
A solicitor said the incident was a response to anger and stress when Williams and the woman were trying to find new accommodation.
The court was told Williams had been a heavy cannabis user for 25 years. His reliance on the drug had been curtailed after engaging with the Magistrate's Early Referral Into Treatment drug and alcohol diversion program.
"He is no longer using cannabis and has cut back on alcohol,'' the solicitor said. Williams was placed on a 12-month good behaviour bond and ordered to complete counselling and domestic violence and drug and alcohol education.
No action was taken on the breach of a previous good behaviour bond. An apprehended violence order was imposed to provide protection for the assault victim.
