GARY Eyre only ever has a couple of horses in work but he may have his hands on a pretty handy one judging by Karinya Gus' win in the Keith Thompson Memorial (1660m) at Parkes Paceway on Tuesday night.

The club hosted a bumper 10-race program to coincide with Australia Day, and even though Karinya Gus hadn't won prior to the co-feature on the night, the manner of his win suggests there's plenty more in store.
After starting from the inside of the back line, Emma Turnbull was able to steer the $1.30 favourite off the pegs and by the time the field passed the winning post with one lap remaining he was poised in the one-out, one-back trail and ready to pounce.
When Turnbull asked the four-year-old Always A Virgin (USA) x Amorangi stallion, bred by the famed Hando family at Rosewood stud, for his effort, he responded immediately and easily ran past his rivals before going on to record a comfortable 19.2m victory in a mile rate of 2:02.6.
Strength In Battle ($15.30, Craig Rusten) was second, while Ultimate Attack ($12.50, Murray Sullivan) was a further one-and-a-half metres away in third place.
In the other memorial event that featured on the evening, three-year-old filly Bella Drive was successful in the Joe Dumesny Memorial (1660m) for trainer-driver Todd Prest.
After starting from gate three, Bella Drive ($7.90) was able to find through front and Prest was able to dictate the terms of the race nicely.
Running opening splits of 31.5s and 32.6s, there was plenty left in the tank and when Prest asked her for an effort over the final 400m she was able to slip home in 28.5s and beat Son Of A Virgin ($10.40, Mark Hewitt) by 4.6m, with Midnight In Vegas ($5.90, Glen Wilmot) third.
The only Dubbo success on the night came in the opening event on the program when David Harris piloted the Greg Pay-trained Curls Toby to an upset win in the Col Fletcher Ford Pace (1660m).
Starting at $25.80, the six-year-old swept down the outside in the home straight to win by a head from Spanish Lustre ($3.70, Nathan Hurst) with Beau Romulus ($5.30, Reece Maguire) finishing third after leading throughout.
