Newtown were well on their way to victory when the match resumed on Saturday, with the score at 1-106 in reply to Souths' total of 146.
They went on to make 205 before chasing an unlikely outright as Souths went back in to bat for their second dig.
The Hornets managed to bat out the final 50 overs of the day and finish at 8-153 but the Tigers claimed some handy bowling bonus points.
The win was a dominant one for Newtown, set up on day one when Steve Skinner took six wickets to help roll a full-strength Souths side.
Resuming with just 41 more runs needed for first innings points, Newtown lost Tom Skinner (7) and Troy Tracey (1) inside the first five overs of the day.
Following Greg Kerr's blistering 93 late on day one, no one else was able to really pile on the runs.
Dan French made 31 while Mat Skinner scored 29 as Newtown cruised past the target but chasing quick runs in order to have a crack at the outright, they were all out inside the first 25 overs of the day.
John Colwell knocked over the Tigers tail and finished with 3-9 while youngster Henry Railz impressed again and took 3-22 from nine overs.
With a lead of just 59, Newtown needed early wickets if they were to be any chance of claiming maximum points.
They got exactly that with Josh Williams (0) falling in the fifth over with the score only on one.
Things got worse when the Hornets found themselves at 4-27 and Newtown were a real chance of the season's first outright win.
But the experienced duo of Greg Rummans and Matt Finlay, vital considering Tim Berry, Will Lindsay, Mitch Bower and Asher Robins were all unavailable, steadied the ship.
The pair added 65 for the fifth wicket but another collapse saw the score suddenly 8-120, with more than eight overs remaining in the day.
Mick Fraser (23 not out) and Tony Ross (12 not out) batted well and saw their side through to stumps but Souths will be disappointed they couldn't score the seven more runs needed for maximum batting points.
Newtown captain Mat Skinner led the way for his side, taking 3-62 while his brothers also got in on the action with Steve claiming an impressive 2-13 from 14 overs while Tom finished with 2-20 from 10 overs.
