HORSE racing fans and officials cheered in unison on Tuesday as the Melbourne Cup race day in Dubbo went ahead despite several days of inclement weather in the lead up.
After stewards were forced to postpone Saturday's Derby Day meeting due to heavy rain in the lead-up to the event, there were grave doubts that the Melbourne Cup meeting would go ahead.
But go ahead they did, and a great day was enjoyed by those socialising in marquees and the general area, trying to back winners and checking out the latest fashion trends.
The Dubbo Turf Club were more than pleased the meeting was able to go ahead, and were ecstatic with the strong turnout.
"We've got great numbers in the marquees and we've had a lot just turn up today (Tuesday)," an official said.
"It's more than we anticipated and we are just really happy the meeting was able to go ahead.
"It was a wait-and-see if it would go ahead due to the weather, but thankfully we've not only had a meeting but another successful one at that."
A couple of horse racing enthusiasts who were having a great time were Dubbo locals Amber Teale and Leah Sayers.
For Ms Sayers, attending the Melbourne Cup races is an annual thing.
"We're having a great time and we've been winning a lot of money," she said.
"I really enjoy race days and this is my favourite day.
"I think it is better than Derby Day as there is a better atmosphere."
Ms Teale said this was her first Melbourne Cup meeting, but as she was having such a good time she could see it becoming an annual thing.
Dubbo bookmaker Ken Orbell wasn't expecting to break any records for money taken on the five race meeting.
"There is a good crowd in and they've all gotten into the spirit of the Melbourne Cup which is great," he said.
"But it isn't a massive day for the bookies on the local races, most of the betting is for the races in Melbourne."
The Derby Day meeting that was postponed is due to be run this Friday.
