October 1 marked the official start of the statewide and statutory Bush Fire Danger Period.
Essential Energy's manager community relations northern, David Crough, said there were basic safety precautions that owners could adopt to reduce the risk of bushfire to their properties, given the hot and dry weather conditions forecast in the lead up to summer.
"Simple steps like mowing lawns regularly, cleaning any leaves and debris from gutters and ensuring wood piles are stored away from homes can help to protect your property from fire," he said.
"We also encourage people to download and complete a Bushfire Survival Plan and Farm FireWise Checklist from the Rural Fire Service website at www.rfs.nsw.gov.au and ensure everyone in the household is prepared to put the plans into action - quickly."
Mr Crough also urged property owners to identify vegetation growing too close to overhead powerlines near their homes or farms.
"We recommend vegetation be kept at least 15 metres clear from lines so if you notice any potential hazards contact Essential Energy for a safety assessment before attempting any pruning or removal," he said.
Essential Energy's Plan Before You Plant guide at www.essentialenergy.com.au/trees outlines appropriate species for planting at different locations.
Mr Crough said in the event of a bushfire, residents should keep watch for damaged infrastructure, burning poles and fallen powerlines.
"Remember to treat all fallen powerlines as live and anything in contact with them, such as fences, water pipes and trees," he said.
"If you come across a damaged or fallen powerline, remain at least eight metres away and contact Essential Energy immediately on 13 20 80."
