Probationary constables Alexander McLean and Rebecca Sutton graduated from the NSW Police Academy at Goulburn on Friday.
Both hailed from Sydney's northern beaches and looked forward to not only enjoying the short drive to work but the variety of work rural and regional policing offered.
Probationary Constable McLean, 22, said he developed a passion for emergency service work through the NSW Rural Fire Service.
While there was nothing definite he planned to specialise in at this stage, the dog squad and marine area command were both areas that interested him, he said.
Weapons and tactics training at the academy, including using firearms, had been a little bit daunting at first, Probationary Constable McLean said, but he was excited to learn of his new post in the state's west four weeks ahead of his graduation.
The "variety" and "not being stuck behind a desk all the time" were among factors that had attracted 21-year-old Probationary Constable Sutton to a career in policing.
She enjoyed her time at the academy, she said, particularly the friendships she formed.
Probationary Constable Sutton said she would get a taste of general duties policing before deciding whether she would like to specialise in a particular area.
Orana Local Area Command Acting Inspector Andrew McKittrick said the recruits underwent an induction on their first day and would be teamed up with an experienced police officer to show them the ropes during their first few weeks.
He said Dubbo was an excellent location for the recruits to begin their careers.
"They will be exposed to a variety of things they would not necessarily see if they were based in Sydney," he said.
