A report prepared on behalf of credit bureau Veda places the region titled Bourke-Cobar-Coonamble seventh-worst in NSW.
The report was released to coincide with the launch of an online tool getcreditscore.com.au that allowed people to find out their credit scores.
In the new report, regions were ranked according to credit scores based on individuals' credit histories, with zero being the lowest and 1200 being the highest possible score.
Financial institutions and organisations such as pay day lenders, phone companies, internet service providers, electricity and gas companies and hire-purchase companies used individuals' credit profiles to decide on whether to allow individuals to borrow, how much and at what rates.
Credit profiles could be adversely affected by unpaid bills, late payments, court judgements or writs, bankruptcies or personal insolvency.
The state's worst, according to the report, was Mount Druitt, with a score of 680.
Making up the worst ten, in order, were Merrylands-Guildford (680), Auburn (712), Campbelltown (715), St Marys (716), Sydney Inner City (722), Bourke - Cobar - Coonamble (722), Canterbury (725), Liverpool (726) and Moree-Narrabri (728). The most financially responsible area in NSW, according to the report, was Ku-ring-gai (823). This was followed by Pittwater (816), Dural-Wisemans Ferry (813), Baulkham Hills (807), Pennant Hills - Epping (807), Sutherland - Menai - Heathcote (804), Hawkesbury (799), Blue Mountains (797), Cronulla - Miranda - Caringbah (796) and South Coast (795).
Research by Veda in 2014 showed 78 per cent of Australians had never checked their credit history and had no idea what was on their credit profile.
Consumer advocate Christopher Zinn said in the US and UK, knowing your credit score was a part of everyday life and consumers there proactively used it to get the best deal.
