Cabonne Council spokesman Dale Jones said council staff were dispatched to secure the gate yesterday morning, but further steps will probably be taken.
“Cabonne Council had a discussion on Friday about the potential for people to break the law, but with so much snow expected, we thought there would be plenty below the gates for people to enjoy an experience in the snow,” Mr Jones said.
“This is very disappointing and we will work with police to ensure whoever is responsible is prosecuted to the full extent of the law,” he said.
Mr Jones said Cabonne Council may now have to go one step further in ensuring the safety of the public and will review what can be done to put greater security measures in place, which could even include security cameras.
Mr Jones said Cabonne Council staff have done everything possible so far to prevent people doing the wrong thing.
“The problem is these inconsiderate people who don’t think the rules apply to them end up getting stuck on the mountain and then someone has to go and rescue them and help them get their vehicle down,” he said.
Mr Jones warned it is not the snow alone that is the problem.
“Its the black ice - it’s treacherous.”
Inspector Peter Atkins of Orange police said police will charge anyone caught removing the locks on the gates at Mount Canobolas with malicious damage.
“We will bring them before the courts,” he said.
“The problem with this type of behaviour is everyone else who has to become involved including police and the SES to address any problems that may arise,” he said.
Staff from Cabonne Council were called out to repair the gate and lock it and drivers are warned not to break the law by driving through the gates.
