Regular tests are the most effective way of detecting changes and identifying problems early with eyes.

Seventy-five per cent of vision loss is preventable or treatable if detected early, yet every 65 minutes an Australian loses part or all of their vision. Burgun and Brennan Optometrists’ Tony Burgun said it was important for everyone to get regular checkups.

“Those with family history of eye disease should get their eyes tested often,” he said.

“Children starting school should get an eye examination done, as poor vision can affect learning.”

Mr Burgun said an eye screening won’t detect vision loss, which is why children need a full eye examination.

He said eye diseases such as glaucoma, macula degeneration and diabetic eye disease can be avoided if detected early enough.

Mr Burgun said people should get their eyes tested every two years, but a busy lifestyle often made people neglect taking the trip to the optometrist.

“As you get older you should get your eyes tested more often, or if you have a family history of eye disease,” he said.

The Vision Eye Institute reported eye issues were the most common health problem experienced by Australians.

In Australia, 200,000 people suffer from glaucoma, and 100,000 people have macular degeneration.

OPSM optometrist Carina Ng said vision was one of our most important senses and we needed to maintain the health of our eyes.

“Early detection and prevention is imperative to maintaining eye health and sight, in both young and old,” she said.

“You may be losing your sight due to glaucoma or macular degeneration without being aware of the problem. Your child may be experiencing vision problems without complaints because they do not know otherwise; as a result they may lag behind at school.”

Ms Ng said some of the common symptoms of vision loss included blurry vision, symptoms of flashes or floaters, sudden vision loss in one or both eyes, trouble seeing at night, pain, headaches and trouble with peripheral vision
