On page three today we read about a woman who is having to ask for help to fund her travel arrangements so she can get to Sydney for treatment because of brain cancer.
The cost of treatment alone for this woman and her family are enough, but add on the travel, accommodation and all the other associated costs and it just becomes too much.
While travel costs may not seem like much, they add up each and every time you have to undergo treatment.
And it's not just the cost, it is the energy and time away from loved ones that are draining on the patient as well.
The government needs to do more to help.
The current Isolated Patients Travel and Accommodation Assistance Scheme (IPTAAS) allows for some subsidisation for costs, but doesn't cover everything with rural residents still left out of pocket at the end of their trip.
If you have to travel for medical issues because you can't access specialists, you shouldn't be left out of pocket.

In some good news, this time for aging residents of Dubbo, a new My Aged Care service will start on July 1.
The new service means you no longer have to spend hours looking for the support you need, rather My Aged Care will be a one-stop-shop to providing access to home support services and a way to update records.
Its great to see another service helping people stay in their homes as long as they can.
