The owner of Soho in Kings Cross, Andrew Lazarus, confirmed the closure to industry website inthemix after rumours circulated on social media at the weekend.

"The lockout laws have destroyed an entertainment precinct, making us the latest victim," he said.

"These laws have seen patronage to the Kings Cross area decline significantly and when combined with the increased cost of compliance, it has made the business of providing entertainment no longer viable."

The club opened more than 20 years ago under the name YU, and has been known as Soho for about 15 years. It was recently in the public eye after Mr Lazarus' 23-year-old son Luke was jailed for at least three years for raping a teenage girl in an alleyway adjacent to the venue. The incident occurred in the early hours of May 12, 2013, on the victim's first visit to Kings Cross.

Luke Lazarus later boasted about his crime to a friend, texting: "Was a sick night - took a chick's virginity."

In reports of his son's conviction in March of this year, Mr Lazarus noted that Soho had suffered a "major backlash" and that patronage had decreased significantly.

But in social media discussion of the closure, patrons blamed the lockout and last drinks legislation, introduced early in 2014 under Barry O'Farrell. The laws, a response to alcohol-related violence, banned patrons from entering venues in the CBD and Kings Cross after 1.30am, and stipulated last drinks must be served by 3am.

Patron Jamie Olsen said on Facebook that it was "a sad day".

"Absolutely clear the NSW government wants to eradicate nightlife in Kings Cross," he wrote. "How on earth can anyone run a business given the punitive operating conditions imposed on long standing legitimate reputable businesses."

Sydney DJ Glover said Soho had given many young DJs the opportunity to play their first gigs, as well as showcasing respected international talent.

"I know I speak for many Aussie DJs when I say that Soho has played a massive role in the development of our scene," he wrote.

The nightclub joins several others to shut up shop since the lockout laws were introduced, including the Flinders Hotel in Surry Hills (near Taylor Square), Gay Bar on Oxford Street and The Backroom in Potts Point. After-hours club Spice Cellar relocated from the CBD to Erskineville, which is outside the lockout zone and Oxford Street venue Q Bar is due to close in July.

A recent statistical review of the impact of the lockout, conducted by the Bureau of Crime Statistics and Research, found the measures had been successful in reducing alcohol-related violence faster than the rate at which it was already decreasing before they were introduced.

It also found that taxi patronage in Kings Cross had decreased since the laws were introduced.

In January, the Deputy Premier, Troy Grant, announced the lockout laws would be reviewed in June. Asked on Tuesday if that would proceed, a spokesman for the Premier, Mike Baird, said the government had "no intention" of changing the laws.

"The statutory review will commence in 2016," the spokesman said.

"We are constantly assessing the effectiveness of all our measures, in all areas of policy, as new data becomes available."
