Wheeler won gold in the MMAS9 individual pursuit at the 2015 Masters National Track Championships in March and will look to record his second Masters World Track title later this year.
Funds raised will also be dedicated to a junior development fund, to assist with the costs of attending representative events in which a number of Dubbo juniors are continuing to reach the upper echelons of the sport.
Dubbo Cycle Club will host three special guest speakers on the evening, including champion Australian cyclists Brad McGee and Stephen Wooldridge, as well as Dubbo’s own junior world champion and Commonwealth Games gold medalist, Megan Dunn.
Born and raised in Dubbo, Dunn won three UCI Track World Championship junior titles in 2008, as well two gold medals at the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi, India. Dunn also won another three junior world track titles in 2009 as well as gold medals in three events at the Oceania Championships.
In a career that spanned 15 years on the track and the road, McGee won two stages of the Tour de France and one stage of the Giro d’Italia and wore the leader’s jersey in both of those grand tours.
McGee also won Olympic and Commonwealth games gold medals on the track and was also a world champion in both the team and individual pursuit events.
McGee is currently the head cycling coach for the NSW Institute of Sport and has had a hand in developing Dubbo junior riders, including Adam Mitchell, Kurt Eather and Luke Ensor.
Wooldridge was a member of Australia’s World Champion Men’s Team Pursuit on four occasions, taking out the title in 2002, 2003, 2004 and 2006.
He was also a member of the Australian men’s team pursuit that claimed gold at the 2004 Athens Olympic Games, as well winning a gold medal at the 2002 Manchester Commonwealth Games and silver at the 2006 Melbourne Commonwealth Games in that same event.
A large number of items have already been donated by local businesses and supporters of the club for auction on the night, with items signed by Tour de France winner Cadel Evans and champion sprinter Robbie McEwen set to go under the hammer along with a host of sporting memorabilia and donations provided to the club.
Tickets for the event are $50 and must be pre-purchased at either Wheeler Cycles on Talbragar Street or through Dubbo Cycle Club Treasurer Janette Eather who can be contacted on 0408 268 435.
The event will begin at 7pm at Club Dubbo and will include a three-course meal.
