But even with all that against them the Dubbo side produced a clinical Premier League Hockey (PLH) performance to win 3-0 against Zig Zag.
With coach Craig Johnston unavailable and the likes of Tarlee Roberts and Emma Corcoran it was a difficult trip for Dubbo but goals from Alex Waters, Alisa Seton and Courtney Hogan sealed the win.
"We had a few out so we weren't expected to play as well as we did but it was a really good team game," Blue Jays' Kate Corcoran said.
While the goalscoring prowess was impressive, the work in defence and midfield to shut down the athletic Zig Zag players was a standout.
Corcoran praised the efforts of Emily Lake and Hogan in midfield while Kendall McDonagh and the rest of the defensive unit also stood out.
"Zig Zag had opportunities, they were fast and fit and have some great players," she said.
"But we were able to shut them down and kept them under control.
"Our goalie Michelle Courtney was unreal, she leads the team from the back with Amy Davies."
The win moves the Blue Jays back up to fourth leading into next weekend's bye.
Following that is a match against the competition leading Lithgow Panthers but apart from a trip to Bathurst two weeks' later, the rest of the Blue Jays' matches will be played at home.
Corcoran said the team phoned coach Johnston on the trip home yesterday, and he was delighted to be in the top four in the lead up to having seven of the final eight matches at Pioneer Park.
"Craig did mention we're exactly where he'd like us to be at the moment, we've got some tough games coming up but then a lot of home games too," she said.
"We play Panthers at the Parkes Gala Day so we're preparing for a tough game there but after one game at Bathurst we've got a lot at home so hopefully the fans can group together and we can put on a good show."
