Dojo instructor, Shidoin Daniel Anderson, said it was a great opportunity for women in the Dubbo community to learn simple yet effective techniques, such as kicking an attacker in the groin, to help protect themselves and their families.
More than 30 women attended Saturday's seminar.
Shidoin Daniel said approximately 35 women in Australia had died from domestic violence attacks in Australia this year alone.
Shidoin Daniel said the seminar was important for the women to learn how to not only protect themselves, but the lives of their loved ones.
Kumiai-Ryu Martial Arts System co-owner, Tanya Anderson, said they hoped the women attending the seminar would take the basic techniques home and feel confident applying them if need be.
"This program was added in for those who don't necessarily train with us," she said.
"We want to get the message out to people, that what we do is not about hurting people, it's about protecting yourself."
Participants Sharon Neave and Janine Pearce, said they thought self-defence skills were a necessity in Dubbo.
"I wanted to do this for my own safety," Mrs Neave said. "I walk to the gym in the morning when it's still dark so it's good to have these skills behind me."
Mrs Pearce was in a similar boat. "There is not nearly enough lighting in the streets and in car parks in Dubbo," she said. "I wanted to know I can defend myself when I leave work at night time."
