Dubbo has a crime rate twice the NSW average – not good for residents or the city’s image.
The rate has been steady for years. The community is aware of and backs determined police efforts to reduce offences.
t is common knowledge the Ice epidemic is likely to lead to spark more crime, as police and drug experts have been warning.
It is also public knowledge the use of Ice (crystal methamphetamines) is high in rural towns and people in remote areas are twice as likely to take methamphetamines.
Wellington, also the victim of a high crime rate, has a serious Ice problem.
No community is safe from this pervasive drug.
The NSW government last week announced a key initiative to combat Ice, the Stimulant Treatment Program, would be expanded to three regions.
Our region was not included. The government did not say what services or funding we would get.
Community members, social workers, the Orana Country Labor branch and others have called for a drug court and rehabilitation centre in the region.
A Drug Court works with offenders and can reduce repeat offences.
It can order rehabilitation at a centre.
There is no “rehab” centre in Dubbo. A Dubbo court and centre could serve the region. Please disclose when we will get them.
