MORE than 1750 adults and children in Dubbo and district would have gone without the necessities of life between July 2014 and April 2015 had it not been for the St Vincent de Paul Society NSW.
The volunteer-run Family Assistance Centre operating out of the city's Vinnies store is feeding the hungry, finding beds for the homeless, ensuring households are not left in the dark and connecting the needy and vulnerable with support services.
Figures released by the society as it launches another winter appeal reveal the centre's commitment to the community.
In the 10-month period the centre helped 916 clients, 386 males and 530 females, who were caring for a total of 842 children.
More than $63,000 worth of food was distributed in 1200 parcels and $8000 spent on providing emergency accommodation.
The centre also distributed $74,500 from the NSW government's Energy Accounts Payment Assistance scheme.
Dan Sullivan, who with Pat Yeo is co-ordinating the appeal in Dubbo, tells of growing need and a local target of $10,000.
"If you can help in any way to provide winter warmth, to extend a loving hand to those in need, your donation would be greatly appreciated," he said.
"Please donate to the Vinnies 2015 Winter Appeal and help us continue to change lives every day.
"Without the community support and the commitment of the volunteers who work at the Vinnies centre, we would not have the financial resources to help many people in the Dubbo community and district."
The St Vincent de Paul Society NSW reports of meeting a 24 per cent jump in calls for help across the past two winters.
President Ray Reynolds said the generosity of ordinary Australians would "help us renew the spirit of those people doing it tough".
"Throughout the winter period our 25,000 members and volunteers across the state will be helping people rebuild their lives providing assistance with food, utility and phone bills, transport costs, clothing, blankets and accommodation," he said.
Rebuilding Lives is the theme of the 2015 Vinnies Winter Appeal which will be launched in Dubbo this weekend at St Brigid's Parish masses.
Donation envelopes can be collected and left at Vinnies, 126 Brisbane Street.
A donation of more than $2 is tax deductible and will be issued if so requested on an envelope.
Mr Sullivan is hoping businesses will join the public in supporting the work of the society in Dubbo.
He can be contacted on 0417 215 898.
The Family Assistance Centre is open from 9.30am to 11.30am, from Monday to Friday.
