After more than 90 years of broadcasting, Radio 2UE aired its final news bulletin at 6pm on Thursday night.

The final bulletin was aired from 2UE's studio on Sydney's north shore in Greenwich.

From 7pm, a combined 2UE and 2GB news bulletin would be aired from Macquarie's national newsroom at Pyrmont.

The Fairfax-owned 2UE radio news service has merged with Macquarie Radio Network's 2GB.

It is understood the $200 million merger will result in the loss of at least 50 jobs - with about 30 from Sydney and the rest from stations in other capital cities including Brisbane.

Radio 2UE's news director Matt McDonald anchored the final news bulletin at 6pm.

The bulletin started with an item about a school cleaner Vincent Stanford being charged with  murdering Leeton High School teacher Stephanie Scott and ended with Robert Spicer declaring the end of iconic radio station which he said had covered the most significant news events of the past 90 years.

Mr McDonald said it was a sad occasion and that some of Australia's brightest journalists had cut their teeth at 2UE - and had worn that experience as a "badge of honour".

A spokesman for 2UE said the new combined newsroom will supply bulletins and updates to both 2UE and 2GB and will be staffed by more than 20 journalists.

"The precise make-up of the team is yet to be finalised but will include existing journalists from both stations," the spokesman said. "The redundancies from the creation of the single newsroom in Sydney are regrettable but the right commercial decision to support our business in delivering the benchmark radio news service in the country."

Sydney's best-known talkback radio voices including John Laws, Alan Jones and Ray Hadley have remonstrated over the 2UE microphone.

Radio veteran Bob Rogers helped pioneer the Top 40 from the late 1950s to the early 1960s when he worked for the station.
